The Deeside Model Aircraft Club (DMAC) was originally founded as the Heswall MAC in September 1950, making it one of the Wirral's longest established clubs. In 2003 it was decided to change the name of the club to the Deeside MAC in order more accurately to indicate the location of its present flying site on the north bank of the River Dee, some 6 miles south of the town of Heswall after which the Club was originally named. The Club, which currently has over 75 members, encourages junior members (under 18 years of age) to take up the hobby, and also welcomes beginners of all ages. Tuition for novice fliers is freely available from experienced club members, and every effort is made to assist disabled members to enjoy the hobby to the full. On 2nd September 2000 the Club celebrated its Golden Jubilee with a flying day for present and past members and guests at the Broken Bank flying field. A wide variety of models was flown including control-line, free-flight rubber and Jetex power, and radio-controlled fixed wing (gliders, electric, I/C power and ducted fans) and helicopter. More than 100 people attended the event. Click here to download a report on the Golden Jubilee meeting in Adobe's PDF format (***Warning: file is 1.2Mb***). The DMAC Clubhouse is situated at Gayton Playing Fields, Brimstage Road, Heswall. Members meet at the Clubhouse every Friday evening to chat, and dry throats are lubricated afterwards at the bar of the adjoining Squash Club. The third Friday of every month is a Club Night on which various events such as video shows, quiz nights, talks on modelling topics, bring-and-buy sales, etc. are held. Social events include an annual Christmas get-together, an annual dinner-dance, and barbecue evenings at the flying field, and the monthly newsletter, the Hawk, provides both news and entertainment. Visitors and prospective members are welcome to call in at the Gayton Clubhouse any Friday evening from 8:00pm onwards to meet club members and learn more about the DMAC. Enquiries are welcomed from those wishing to join the Deeside MAC. The primary interest of most DMAC members is radio-control power models, both rotary- and fixed-wing, although facilities are also available for control line and free flight models. Interest in radio-control is very broad-based with sports, scale, fun-fly, aerobatic and ducted-fan models all being flown regularly, and the occasional pylon racer or "oddball" model thrown in for good measure. Electric flight has grown in popularity within the club, but is still mostly confined to powered gliders. Radio-control flying takes place at the Broken Bank flying site which is operated under licence from Flintshire County Council. The site is located on the Wirral shore of the Dee Estuary close to the New Dee Crossing, and is thus easily accessible from the Wirral, Chester area and north Flintshire. Subject to prior arrangement, visitors to the area are welcome to fly as guests of the DMAC at the Broken Bank site providing that they hold full BMFA insurance.
